Music Lessons

Let’s play some tunes!

Do you or your child want to learn to play an instrument, in a way that feels good? Even if you are a raw beginner, you can learn to play or sing in a way that inspires joy inside yourself and others. Music has been such an important part of my life, not just for the tunes and songs themselves, but for the friends and community that is bound together by them.

In addition to teaching how to play from the heart, I can also help connect you to real live music communities that suit your interest, if you so desire.

By the way – If you don’t read music, no problemo! My preference is to teach and learn by ear, and use tablature occasionally when it’s helpful. But we can play music written on a staff too, if you like.

Genres

I love any type of folk music! My home base is Oldtime tunes and songs. I also like to play Irish, Bluegrass, Country, and Klezmer. If you want to learn something specific, let’s see if it’s a good fit!

Instruments

My main instruments are Fiddle, Guitar, Banjo, Irish Pennywhistle, and a bit of Bass. In high school I also played Clarinet and Saxaphone. If you have a Ukulele we can work with that too.

Songwriting

I write a lot of songs and tunes and would love to help you work on yours. This is also a great creativity pathway for kids.

Kids

I’m happy to help your kids with whatever they are working on at school, and/or supplement it with other fun stuff. If they have a recorder, I can help them make it less shreiky.

If you have several kids that want lessons back to back, we can work something out. I can also do a group lesson and teach your kids how to be in a little band, if they’re ready for it.

Reviews

“It is my pleasure to recommend Bex Bee as a skilled music teacher. I started a year and a half ago playing guitar in the Old Time style. Bex was able to give me some easy exercises that had me jamming along in no time. She is able to break things down and explain them like no other music teacher. When I started to pick up the fiddle a half year later I confided in Bex for some lessons. She took my fiddle playing from just barely scratching out tunes to what sounded like an authentic fiddler within a couple lessons. Bex is very patient and has a very keen sense of how to correct small mistakes that make all the difference in your playing. Bex is really good at breaking up tunes into small pieces and focuses on bowing patterns. I would recommend Bex for all ages and skill levels.”

“I’ve had a few guitar lessons with Bex. She is very knowledgeable about music theory, and has an excellent ability to adapt her lessons to my skill level. She is patient and friendly. I would highly recommend her to anyone thinking of learning an instrument.”

I also occasionally spend time in Seattle, so I can also offer intermittent lessons there.
